Everything You Need To Know About Jowar
An excellent multi-cut, tall and fast growing forage crop suitable for pasture, green chop, silage and they can be grown all over India. It gives numerous tillers, stems which are thin, juicy and tasty. Maximum food value is just before the boot leaf stage. It has a high percentage of proteins and digestible dry matter. It is highly palatable and fairly tolerant to pests, diseases. Three to four cuttings can be taken depending on fertility of soil availability of moisture and land set aside for the forage crop.
Tips for better yield
- Seed rate: 10-12 kgs per acre
- Sowing: Summer, Kharif and Rabi (only where the temperature doesn’t go too low).
- Fertilizer: 5 to 6 tons of F.Y.M per acre. N:P:K , 20:24:20 (Basal dose) N.30K (60 kg Urea) after 15 days of germination and 50 kg Urea after every cut.
- Important: Cutting should be taken just before the boot leaf stage cur 4” to 6” from the ground level.
